Is Katowice Worth a Detour? Our Honest Take

By · Visited in July 2026 · Updated · How we work

When planning a road trip across Poland, one question comes up often: should you dedicate a stop to Katowice, or even spend a night or two there? Here's our take, based on our own experience. If you do stop there, head to our highlights in Katowice.

Our choice: Katowice as a base, not a destination

True story, July 2026: we didn't dedicate a stay to Katowice itself. We spent three nights in Piotrowice, a village near Oświęcim, less than an hour from Katowice, in an aparthotel chosen for its proximity to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and to Energylandia, where we planned to go during this leg of the trip. Katowice itself only got a two-to-three-hour walk through its centre.

Our take

For a dedicated two-day city break, Katowice clearly wasn't our priority, and our experience doesn't let us recommend that format with any real authority. On the other hand, if your itinerary already takes you through the region to go to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial or to Energylandia — as was our case — Katowice (or, closer still to both sites, a village like Piotrowice) makes a practical base, with a quick tour of the city centre as a bonus if you have a free evening.

Our most important piece of advice: don't build your Polish itinerary around Katowice, but don't hesitate to make a short stop there if it naturally fits your route to other destinations in the region.

Good to know

▸ Good to know

  • Piotrowice, near Oświęcim, is well placed for getting to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial as well as to Energylandia without extra driving.
  • A 2-3 hour tour is plenty for a look at Katowice's city centre.
  • If you're particularly interested in industrial architecture and mining heritage, allow more time to properly explore the Spodek, Nikiszowiec and the Silesian Museum — which we only saw from the outside.

Frequently asked questions

Should you stay overnight in Katowice during a road trip across Poland?

Not necessarily: we preferred to stay in Piotrowice, near Oświęcim, a practical choice for going to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and, on another day, to Energylandia, with a simple tour of central Katowice on the side.

How much time should you allow for Katowice?

Half a day or an evening is enough for a look at the city centre, unless you want to dig deeper into its industrial and mining heritage (Spodek, Nikiszowiec, Silesian Museum).
