Hiking in the Tatras: Morskie Oko and Kościeliska Valley
By Jérôme R · Not visited yet: research-based guide · Updated · How we work
The Polish Tatras are among the finest hiking grounds in Central Europe. We didn't have time, during our stay, to hike the two most renowned routes in the area — but here, in full honesty, is what you need to know before setting off. We based our stay in the area at Ciche, a village in the Podhale.
A note on transparency
A note on transparency: the information below is drawn from our research, not from personal experience. During our stay we only did a short walk to a viewpoint from Kasprowy Wierch — not a full hike into either valley.

Lake Morskie Oko
Lake Morskie Oko (“the Eye of the Sea” in Polish) is the most iconic and best-documented hike in the Polish Tatras. The trail runs about 9 km one way from the car park, on a wide, well-marked path suitable for most walkers. Parking at Palenica Białczańska must be booked online. To save effort, since September 2026 horse-drawn carriages only cover the first 3 km (to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza); electric shuttles then take over as far as Włosienica, 1.5 km from the lake, and the rest is on foot. Prices change, so check them on the Tatra National Park (TPN) website before you go.
It's the most searched-for topic in the whole Tatras region, and the best documented online — a sign of its popularity, but also of the crowds you should expect on site in peak season.

Kościeliska Valley
Kościeliska Valley (Dolina Kościeliska) is regularly described as one of the most beautiful valleys in the Western Tatras, with a route of about 11 km round trip (3 hr 30 min to 4 hours' walking), running past karst formations and several caves, including the Raptawicka and Mroźna caves. Some sources even describe the first section as pushchair-friendly, making it more of a family option than Morskie Oko.

Good to know
▸ Good to know
- Both routes start from dedicated car parks, usually paid, worth booking or arriving early for in peak season.
- Bring proper walking shoes and water: shops are scarce once you're on the trails.
- If you're after a quieter, less crowded hike than Morskie Oko, Kościeliska Valley looks like a better option based on our research.
