Where to Stay in Warsaw: The Districts to Consider
By Jérôme R · Not visited yet: research-based guide · Updated · How we work
Which district to choose mostly depends on what you're after: the historic setting of the Old Town, the convenience of the business centre, or the more alternative, cheaper vibe of the right bank. Also check out our highlights for visiting Warsaw.
Stare Miasto (the Old Town)
The most picturesque setting, with everything within walking distance: the Royal Castle, the Market Square, the cathedral. The trade-off: it's the most touristy and expensive district in the city, and relatively few Varsovians actually live there day to day.
Śródmieście (the centre)
The central district, blending modern buildings with historic ones, close to the train stations and metro. A good compromise for families and couples, even though some business areas can feel a bit soulless after dark. Expect around €50-90 for a double room, and from €110 for a 4-star hotel (rough ranges, to confirm when booking).
Praga
On the right bank of the Vistula, spared by the 1944 destruction: the buildings here are genuinely pre-war, unlike the rest of the city. A more alternative atmosphere (galleries, bars, nightlife), generally cheaper than the centre, but further out and still going through gentrification in places.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best district for a first trip to Warsaw?
Śródmieście (the centre) offers the best compromise between convenience and walking access to the main sights, without the tourist markup of the Old Town.
Is Praga a safe district for tourists?
Yes, on the whole, but it's a more working-class district still in transition in places — worth choosing if you're after a less touristy feel rather than a spotless setting everywhere.
