Kraków Airport to City Centre: Train, Bus, Taxi or Car

By · Visited in July 2026 · Updated · How we work

Kraków's John Paul II Airport (Kraków-Balice) sits about thirty minutes from the city centre. Several options exist for the journey; we personally chose car hire, with a couple of surprises along the way. Here's a practical comparison of what's on offer.

Your options for reaching the centre

The SKA train (Szybka Kolej Aglomeracyjna). This rail link runs directly from the airport to Kraków's main station (Kraków Główny) in about twenty minutes, at regular intervals. It's generally the fastest and cheapest option if you're not weighed down with luggage.

The bus. Several lines (notably 208, 252 and 902) connect the airport to the city centre — a slightly longer ride than the train, but with a wider network of stops depending on where your hotel is.

Taxi or private transfer. The most comfortable option, especially with luggage or a family in tow. As with any airport taxi, it's worth checking the meter is used or a fixed price is agreed before you set off.

Car hire. The option we chose, handy for a two-week road trip across several regions of Poland — though it does mean dealing with local rental-desk practices. See our experience below.

Our experience with car hire

True story, July 2026: we'd booked a car for our full two-week road trip, through a local rental company, right at the airport counter.

First surprise: our bank card wasn't accepted for the deposit, as the rental company flagged it as a debit rather than a credit card. We had to cancel the insurance taken out through our original booking platform and take their top insurance package instead, plus a return-without-refuelling option — an extra cost of just over €200 was added on the spot.

Second surprise, when picking up the car: while inspecting it, we noticed one of the rear seatbelts was broken. Back to the counter, then swapped for an identical replacement model.

What we took away from it: check with your bank before you leave whether your card is recognised as a credit card by international car-hire standards, and take the time to inspect the whole vehicle (rear seatbelts included) before leaving the counter.

Good to know

▸ Good to know

  • Long-stay parking at your departure airport (if flying from the UK or elsewhere) can be a real saving if booked several months ahead.
  • If you're hiring a car, check the exact type of your bank card (credit or debit) with your bank beforehand: it's the most common sticking point at the counter.
  • Inspect the car thoroughly before leaving the rental car park, rear seatbelts included.
