Kraków Christmas Market: 2026 Dates and Practical Info
By Jérôme R · Not visited yet: research-based guide · Updated · How we work
Every winter, Kraków's Main Square (Rynek Główny) hosts one of the best-known Christmas markets in Central Europe. This page brings together what you need to plan a December visit: dates, opening hours, what to eat, the szopki tradition and the weather to expect. A note on transparency: we discovered Kraków in July 2026, not in winter, so we have never been to its Christmas market. This page is a research guide with no personal review, based on the sources listed at the bottom. The photo is ours, taken on the square in summer.
Kraków Christmas Market 2026 dates
The market traditionally sets up on the Main Square, around the Cloth Hall, from late November to 1 January. In 2025 it ran from 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026, with an official opening on Saturday 29 November; stalls were open from around 10 am to 8 pm, and food stalls served until at least 10 pm.
Watch out: for 2026, the organiser (Artim, on behalf of the Krakowska Kongregacja Kupiecka) announces an opening on 27 November 2026 and a closing on 3 or 6 January 2027; the cultural information portal pik.krakow.pl gives 6 January 2027, with stalls open from 10 am to 8 pm and some food stalls open later. As of 25 October 2026, the closing date is therefore not final, so check it before booking flights. Opening hours are usually shorter around Christmas, especially on 24 December.

What you'll find there
Wooden chalets sell Christmas decorations, crafts and gifts. As for food, the sources describe the great Polish winter classics:

Szopki: a Kraków tradition on UNESCO's list
Szopki are a very particular kind of nativity scene: colourful, glittering constructions inspired by Kraków's architecture (the towers of St Mary's Basilica, Wawel…). Since 2018 the tradition has been on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A contest is held every year on the first Thursday of December — Thursday 3 December 2026 — at the foot of the Adam Mickiewicz statue on the Main Square, before the entries are taken to the jury. The prize-winning szopki are then exhibited at the Museum of Kraków, usually until the end of February.
Kraków's other Christmas markets
In 2025, two other markets complemented the main one: a Christmas fair on Mały Rynek (the "Small Market Square", just behind St Mary's Basilica), from 1 December to 1 January, and a fair of handmade items on Podgórze Market Square, over a single weekend in late November. Whether they return in 2026 remains to be confirmed.
