One or Two Days in Kraków: Our Itinerary

By · Visited in July 2026, completed with our research · Updated · How we work

Only got one or two days in Kraków? Our first two days in the city, in July 2026, fit exactly that format: an afternoon and evening in the Old Town and Kazimierz, then a morning at Wawel Castle. Here they are as we lived them, followed by a condensed one-day version. A note on transparency: the "one day" plan condenses our two days; we didn't do it that way in a single day. We flag this clearly below.

Two days in Kraków: what we did

Day 1, afternoon and evening. We arrived in the late morning and our hotel room (MEININGER Kraków Centrum) wasn't ready until 3 pm, so we set off on foot straight away. Lunch at a small burger bar not far from the Jewish quarter, then the Main Square, the Cloth Hall and a stroll around Kazimierz. In the evening, dinner at a family-run Polish restaurant just off the square.

True story, July 2026: many small restaurants in the centre don't open until around 1 pm — worth knowing if you arrive hungry in the late morning.

Day 2, morning. After a very generous hotel breakfast, we walked to Wawel Castle in the late morning: two or three exhibitions of our choice (1.5 to 2 hours), then the Dragon's Den and the fire-breathing statue. A quick lunch — a hot dog from a supermarket, an ice cream — and we were back on the road to our next stop.

If you're staying for the afternoon of day 2 (we left), head back to Kazimierz at a gentle pace and end the evening on Plac Nowy. That's what we did on our last evening in Poland, and it's well worth it.

One day in Kraków: the condensed version

A note on transparency: this plan squeezes into one day the places we visited over two. We didn't do it this way, but the walking times make it realistic.

  • Morning — Old Town: the Main Square, the Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica (the hejnał sounds every hour; if you go inside, the altarpiece opens at 11:50, Monday to Saturday).
  • Midday — Grodzka Street: the street linking the square to Wawel, about a quarter of an hour on foot; grab a quick lunch on the way.
  • Afternoon — Wawel: the free courtyards, then one or two exhibitions of your choice, and the dragon statue by the Vistula.
  • Late afternoon and evening — Kazimierz: the lanes of the Jewish quarter, then street-food dinner on Plac Nowy.

Our tips for a short stay

  • Stay close to the centre: everything is walkable and you'll save precious time. Our neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood advice is in our where to stay in Kraków guide.
  • Driving? Watch out for the hotel car park: ours was small, with a very narrow exit ramp — reception asked for the size of our car.
  • Don't fit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial into a one-day stay: it needs at least half a day plus around 1 hour 15 minutes on the road each way, and it isn't a visit to tack onto a sightseeing day.
  • Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Kraków?

One day is enough for the essentials — the Main Square, the Cloth Hall, Wawel and an evening in Kazimierz — at a brisk pace. Two days let you explore without rushing, which is the format we experienced.

What should you do with two days in Kraków?

Day one: the Old Town and Kazimierz. Day two: Wawel Castle in the morning, then back to Kazimierz and a street-food evening on Plac Nowy. That's our real plan from July 2026, except for the afternoon of day two, which we spent on the road.

Can you see Kraków and Auschwitz on the same day?

In theory, yes, but we advise against it: the Memorial needs at least half a day plus around 1 hour 15 minutes on the road each way, and it isn't a visit to rush. Give it a day of its own.
